Traditionally, in Islamic towns, the muḥtasib was the official accountable for regulating and policing the bazaar as well as other components of city existence. They monitored things such as weights and actions, pricing, cleanliness, sounds, and traffic circulation, and also getting accountable for other problems with general public morality.
